The COVID-19 pandemic raised alarms around the world and spread across Europe; Italy had the highest number of confirmed cases in Europe. Chuei-Ling Shin, a professor in the Department of Political Economy at National Sun Yat-sen University, said that Italy has many immigrants from China, whose travel and interactions may have increased opportunities for infection and contributed to the virus’s spread. In addition, the Italian government underestimated the severity of the outbreak at its early stage and missed the critical window for epidemic prevention.
